Grilling Smoked Fish

Smoked fish is one of the popular viand in my mother’s hometown, I grow up eating them at breakfast, lunch and dinner.  So when I went to Hyehwa informal market last month and see frozen smoked fish I immediately buy a package. If you are not familiar smoked fish are fish that have been cured by smoking.

Smoked Fish

My husband doesn’t want the smell of fish in our apartment, he finds it awful and disgusting so I cook the smoked fish through grilling on our electric grill on the balcony instead of frying them. It took me  over one week before I can all eat of this smoked fish,  I ate them with tomatoes and shrimp paste.

Hosting a Pig Roast? Here’s What to Serve Alongside Your Roast

Roasting a whole pig in a roasting box is a fantastic option for a party, wedding or other event. There is something inherently celebratory about roasting an entire animal on a spit and the delicious barbeque smell is sure to have everyone salivating.

When you are hosting a party with a pig roast hire, it is the big hunk of roasting pork that will certainly taste centre stage. However, it is also important to consider the condiments, sauces and side dishes that you offer along with it. Your guests will not want to just eat pork all by itself and if you serve the right side dishes they will complement the meat and make it even more enjoyable.

Prepare the Pig with a Marinade

If you want to spice up your pig roast and give it a bit of a different flavour, you can always rub the meat with a marinade that will offer it a bit more flavour throughout the process. For example, a tomato relish, a lemon salsa or a cherry sauce can really add a lot of delicious flavour to a roast pig, especially if it is added throughout the cooking process and allowed to soak into the meat.

Pig Roast

Corn on the Cob

A great accompaniment to any pig roast is some delicious creamy corn on the cob. Take some fresh corn and steam it, right in the husks themselves. Offer plenty of butter and salt for your guests so that they can season their own corn on the cob. This is a wonderful summer food and is perfect for an outdoor barbeque.

Coleslaw and Salad

Coleslaw is the perfect side dish for a pork roast for a couple of reasons. First of all, it is served chilled so it helps to contrast the temperature of the warm and juicy pig meat. Also, if the coleslaw has a lot of vinegar in it, this will help to cut through the greasiness in your mouth from the pig meat. This is why you will see many Southern USA barbeque places offering coleslaw as a side dish alongside their pulled pork.

Also, you will want to provide a few different types of salad as well, such as spinach salad, mixed green salad or Mexican inspired salad with salsa, avocado, carrot and corn.

Apple Sauce

Some things just go well together and pork and applesauce is one of those golden combinations. There is a perfect balance between the greasy, juicy, smoked barbeque flavour of the roast pork meat and the sweet, tangy, fruity and light applesauce. If you are serving up a pork roast, make sure that you have plenty of delicious chilled applesauce to serve alongside it.

Use Bramley cooking apples, peel them, chop them and bring them to a boil in a pan. Reduce and simmer until they are soft and pulpy. Then, remove the apples from the heat and beat them with a wooden spoon until they are smooth. Add in a little bit of butter and caster sugar to taste. Make sure that the apple sauce is nice and thick, so that it can be spooned onto the pork.

Baps, Potatoes or Rice?

There are a few options when it comes to serving a carbohydrate along with your pork roast. You might want to offer fresh and fluffy white or whole wheat burger buns. Your guests can put the pork meat on the bap, add the condiments of their choice (such as apple sauce, barbeque sauce, tomato sauce) and then enjoy. Also, sometimes a pork roast can go really well with rice as a side dish – such as a New Orleans style Cajun jambalaya or a South American inspired red beans and rice mixture. Another option is to offer potatoes, whether in the form of seasoned wedges, roasted potatoes or even jacket potatoes.

The answer will depend on the culinary theme of the event, the preferences of your guests and whether or not guests have utensils and a place to sit (rice or potatoes) or are simply snacking while standing (burger buns).

These are just a few ideas, but of course whatever you serve at your pig roast is up to you – so go with what you love!

Sauteed Monggo Beans (Ginisang Monggo)

Cooking and eating Filipino food  is a luxury for me in Korea so I seldom shop for these type of food. Not just they’re bit expensive than the way they are used to be in the Philippines but because there’s only a few stores that sell Asian food. When I met my friends in Hyehwa I bought monggo beans, salty egg and smoked fish in the informal Filipino Market, the monggo beans which you could buy for 10-20 pesos is worth 175 pesos.

Ginisang Monggo

I sauteed the monggo beans the other day, I started by boiling the monggo beans in a separate pot. I almost forgot about it, I just remember when the water started to dry.  Next I did is saute garlic and onion in a separate pot and add the left over string beans, then water and monggo beans when brown. The water from the boiled monggo beans is also best to use but since I over boiled my monggo beans I have nothing else to use. When the vegetable is almost cooked I add lettuce and salt to taste.

Bopis Sauteed with String Beans

One of the food I bought in the Filipino supermarket in Hyehwa is  Bopis it  is a spicy Filipino dish of pork or beef lungs and heart sautéed in tomatoes, chilies and onions, but the bopis I bought was not that good nor spicy.  It was quite different from the bopis I have eaten already, this one is more oily and buttery and the taste is not intense or strong.

Bopis

I have kept the bopis in the freezer as I have no desired of wasting it. I have decided to saute it with onions and garlic and add string beans and ladies finger which are quite old already.

Sauteed String Beans and Water Spinach

As what I have blogged previously I’ve only used half of the string beans and water spinach on my chicken adobo. I have noticed the left over vegetables are getting old and dry so I immediately sauteed them in garlic and onion. I was pleased with the result after adding a pinch of salt despite that I burnt the garlic and onion.

Fried Kangkong and Spring Beans

Eating these vegetables don’t happen every day as they are not around in the local Korean supermarket so I savor the flavor.

Chicken Adobo with Kangkong

On our last shopping day I bought chicken and sprite so I can cook chicken adobo with sprite but unfortunately my husband drink the can of sprite when we had a spicy BHC chicken. So instead I cooked my adobo with string beans and kangkong, I also added the ladies finger because they’re getting old. I bought these vegetables on Sunday at Filipino market in Hyehwa. I just thought it would be easier if I cooked them together rather than separately as I am also planning to cook the vegetables in soy sauce.

Chicken Adobo with Kangkong

Cooking this is just like the normal adobo you just need to add the vegetables when the chicken is already tender. I just used half of the chicken so I will not get tired of eating adobo.

Green Salad with Chicken Tidbits

My husband “discover” a new meal that he could add on his diet, green salad with tomato, lettuce, olive oil, vinegar and chicken tidbits all mixed together. I say discover because it is not part of his diet but one night while looking for a food to eat he saw my tomatoes in the fridge and he decided to prepare a salad and voila it became part of his diet after few days.

Chicken Salad

Well eating salad became also part of my diet since I don’t eat a lot of vegetables, I usually ate meat, sausages, spam and eggs. It was not a balance meal and I surely need green food.

Vegetable Soup with Broccoli

Vegetable soup is a healthy diet for everybody. As I am tired of eating sausages, meat and oatmeal I decided to cook vegetable soup the other day and unlike most of the soup I have cooked I added broccoli to my soup and it was great.

Vegetable Soup

Just too bad that I was not able to find zucchini in the supermarket,  I am planning to add macaroni on the soup but my husband doesn’t like my idea so we just ate it as it is.

Egg Whites Omelette

Copying my husband’s meal is my favorite thing to do, I sometimes wonder what his meal taste like. He has different meal because he has his own diet plan. Unlike me that I could eat anything at any time, the other night I tried his egg meal which is styled like omelette, composed of only egg whites stuff with mozzarella cheese and meat inside.  It was fried on small amount of olive oil.

Egg Meal Diet

My husband was annoyed at me when I complaint that it doesn’t taste good, no salt, pepper or garlic on it.  Anyway last night he decided not to eat eggs anymore because he is already tired, his been eating egg whites since I can’t remember. He will stick to his whey protein and vegetable diet.
