The Tiny Local Dogs I Saw in Our Neighborhood in the Philippines

When I arrived in our neighborhood in the Philippines, one of the first things that caught my attention was a group of tiny dogs wandering around looking for food.

They were incredibly small. At first, I thought they might be Chihuahuas, but they weren't. They were local dogs, the kind we commonly see wandering around neighborhoods here in the Philippines.

I couldn't help but wonder why some of them were so tiny. Maybe they were simply naturally small, or perhaps they didn't get enough nutrition when they were puppies. I remember thinking about whether they had received enough milk from their mother when they were very young, particularly the first milk called colostrum.

What Is Colostrum?

Colostrum is the first milk produced by a mother after giving birth. It is especially important for newborn puppies because it contains nutrients and antibodies that help support their developing immune system.

Puppies receive important maternal antibodies through colostrum during the first hours after birth. Proper nutrition during those early days is important for a puppy's growth and overall development.

Of course, I couldn't really tell why the little dogs in our neighborhood were so small. They could simply have been naturally small local dogs. Whatever the reason, seeing them wandering around searching for food made me feel a little sorry for them.

My Uncle Called Them “Brahmans”

My uncle, who owned one of the dogs, had his own name for them. He called them “Brahmans.”

I honestly have no idea where he got the name. Maybe he was thinking of the Brahman breed of cattle, or perhaps he heard the name somewhere and decided it suited the dogs. Knowing my uncle, he might even have gotten the idea from something he watched on television!

Whatever their name was, those tiny dogs certainly caught my attention.

Sometimes, the most ordinary things become the stories we remember. After spending years away from the Philippines, coming home and seeing these little local dogs wandering around our neighborhood was one of those simple moments that made me appreciate the familiar things I had missed.
